Realty Income (Ticker: O) has long served as a foundational asset for dividend seekers, celebrated for its Triple Net Lease model and a streak of monthly payouts that has earned it “Aristocrat” status. However, as a growth-focused portfolio strategist, my primary mandate is the efficient compounding of capital. Passive income is a tool for the distribution phase of life, not necessarily the accumulation phase.

I initiated this position on September 21, 2023, during a period of significant interest-rate-driven volatility. Now, looking back from July 2026, I am officially closing the position. This is not a reaction to poor performance, the trade was objectively successful, but a strategic reallocation of capital. My investment thesis has evolved to prioritize internal compounding over immediate yield, moving away from assets that necessitate high tax drag and frequent share dilution.

The Performance Breakdown

Over the last three years, Realty Income has validated its reputation as a defensive workhorse. Despite a stubbornly high interest rate environment that pressured the entire REIT sector, the position delivered steady growth and reliable cash flow relatively to the amount of $ invested.

With a Beta of approximately 0.5, the stock acted as a stabilizing force in the portfolio. However, while a ~20% total return over nearly three years is respectable, it highlights the ceiling of a mature REIT when compared to the aggressive capital appreciation available in the broader growth equity markets.

Why Am I Selling? A Mismatch of Life Stage and Asset Type

The decision to exit is rooted in the structural limitations of the REIT model for an investor with a 15–20 year accumulation horizon. Realty Income is a victim of its own success and its legal structure. To avoid corporate taxes, REITs must distribute 90% of taxable income to shareholders. This leaves them with virtually zero retained earnings. Consequently, to acquire new properties, they must perpetually issue new debt or diluting shares.

While the company often reports total revenue growth of 10–12%, the "Dilution Gap" eats the majority of that progress. After accounting for the massive influx of new shares, the Adjusted Funds From Operations (AFFO) growth per share typically lands in a modest 3% to 3.7% range. For an investor seeking to maximize total return, this 3.7% ceiling is a structural drag.

The Opportunity Cost of External Compounding: In the accumulation phase, a dividend-heavy portfolio creates a "reallocation job" for the investor. When a company like Apple or Microsoft earns a dollar, they reinvest a significant portion of it internally into R&D and high-ROIC projects, compounding that dollar tax-free at the corporate level.

In contrast, when Realty Income pays a dividend, that dollar is immediately taxed (at 15–30% depending on the jurisdiction), bleeding capital before it can be reinvested. Over a 15-year horizon, this tax drag significantly degrades the power of compounding. I am choosing to transition from this "capital-distribution model" to a "capital-accumulation model" where the companies I own do the work of internal compounding for me.

Strategic Risks and Macro Considerations

Several structural and macro headwinds influenced the timing of this exit:

The Interest Rate Spread Compression: The “spread” between borrowing costs and property yields (Cap Rates) remains under pressure. In 2026, as interest rates stabilized at levels higher than the previous decade, Realty Income’s cost of capital increased. Unfortunately, property yields do not always rise in lockstep, as sellers of high-quality retail assets are often unwilling to accept the significant price cuts required to keep the buyer’s spread healthy.

The “Cement Box” and Re-leasing Risk Realty Income’s heavy reliance on single-tenant retail, specifically pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens, presents a capital expenditure risk. These buildings are often “cement boxes” designed for a very specific use. If a tenant downsizes or shifts to e-commerce, the cost to repurpose that building for a gym or supermarket is massive. Because Realty Income distributes 90% of its earnings, it lacks the cash reserves to fund these conversions without further share issuance or debt.

Multiple Expansion Ceiling The stock’s valuation multiple (P/AFFO) has hovered around 14.5x, a notable discount from its historical 16.4x average. While some might see this as a “buy” signal, I see it as the “new normal.” Significant multiple expansion is unlikely without aggressive rate cuts, which the current macro environment does not support.

Capital Reallocation

The $1,700 in proceeds will be systematically redirected to prioritize total return and tax efficiency. The transition follows two primary paths:

• Reinforcing Core ETF Positions: Reallocating to SPY5.L, CNDX.L and LYXGRE.DE in case we don’t find an opportunity in individual stocks soon.

• High-Conviction Individual Equities: Seeking exposure to companies with high pricing power and high reinvestment rates. I am looking for businesses that can reinvest 100% of their free cash flow into high-yield R&D and expansion, rather than being legally mandated to pay it out.

Conclusion

Closing the Realty Income position is a sign of portfolio maturity. It is an acknowledgement that a “good company” is not always a “good holding” for every life stage. Realty Income remains a gold standard for retirees in the distribution phase who need monthly cash to cover living expenses with minimal volatility.

However, for those with a long-term growth horizon, the monthly dividend can become a siren song that masks underperformance relative to the broader market and creates unnecessary tax friction. I encourage all investors to evaluate their holdings not just by their yield, but by how efficiently they compound capital toward their ultimate financial goals. At this stage, my path leads beyond the monthly dividend. It was an opportunity at $50, but at $66, I’m happy to take the profits and move on.

Deploying $6,000

When you have fresh cash to deploy, the temptation to “find the next big winner” is intense. But true portfolio longevity is built on foundational pillars. Here is how I allocated the capital:

• $2,500 into SPY5.L (SS SPDR S&P 500): Strengthening the core engine of my portfolio.

  

• $1,000 into CNDX.L (iShares NASDAQ 100): Capturing tech innovation, but through a diversified, rules-based basket rather than individual stock-picking.

  

• €1,000 into LYXGRE.DE (Amundi MSCI Greece): A calculated, non-correlated bet on a recovering European economy with immense upside potential.

  

• $500 into AMZN & $200 into GOOG: Opportunistic additions to high-conviction, cash-generating mega-caps. GOOG, in particular, remains one of my absolute best-performing assets, currently up +81.55%.

Why I Am Avoiding the Speculative Tech Breakouts

Everywhere you look, retail investors are screaming not to miss the boat. Quick riches and easy money for everyone. 'I can’t miss out on the party.' Nvidia (NVDA), Micron (MU), SanDisk (SNDK), and SpaceX (SPCX) are some of the trains everyone is trying to board, regardless of the cost.

To the untrained eye, these look like unstoppable rocket ships. To a disciplined investor, they look like textbook market tops waiting to correct. Let’s break down why I didn’t put a single dollar of my $6,000 into them (at least not directly).

1. Nvidia (NVDA): Priced to Perfection

Nvidia is a legendary company, but at its current level, it is priced for absolute perfection. The stock has been consolidating between $200 and $235, but it faces serious geopolitical headwinds. Regulatory risk is heating up, with US senators calling CEO Jensen Huang to testify regarding sensitive export controls. Furthermore, with a 0.7 performance overlap with the broad S&P 500, buying NVDA directly doesn’t add true diversification, it simply concentrates risk in a high-beta asset that I already indirectly own through SPY5.L and CNDX.L.

2. Micron (MU) & SanDisk (SNDK): The Cyclical Memory Trap

Yes, Micron and SanDisk skyrocketed earlier this year and congratulations if you were already invested in any of these companies. I wasn’t. And I’m totally fine with that. In my opinion memory is a commodity business. The massive demand for DRAM and NAND flash has created a temporary scarcity that has driven prices sky-high.

Buying now means buying at the absolute peak of the supply cycle. When competitors catch up and supply matches demand, hardware prices will crash, and late-stage investors will be hit with severe margin compression. We’ve already seen warning signs: SanDisk’s options are pricing in an eye-watering 124% implied volatility, and the stock recently suffered a brutal 31% selloff from its peak. I have no interest in holding the bag on a highly volatile commodity cycle.

3. SpaceX (SPCX): A Brutal Lesson in IPO Hype

The crown jewel of recent market hype was the SpaceX IPO on June 12, 2026. It went public at a record-breaking $1.75 trillion valuation ($135/share) despite posting a massive $4.28 billion net loss in Q1 2026 alone.

Retail investors, blinded by Elon Musk’s vision, piled in and pushed the stock to $229. What happened next? The excitement faded, the reality of heavy capital expenditures and xAI-merger cash burn sank in, and the stock crashed by a third, plunging below its IPO price and wiping out $850 billion in market value. Those who chased the IPO are now deep in the red.

The Bottom Line

Investing is not about making the most noise, it is about staying in the game the longest. It’s very tempting to win the fastest way possible but you probably don’t have the stomach to tolerate the downside.

My $6,000 addition was aligned to my strategy. Why now? The answer is always “The best day to invest was 10 years ago. The second best day is today”. I chose predictable index compounding and cash-flowing mega-caps over speculative high-flyers. Reaching almost $30,000 is a milestone, but the philosophy that got me here, patience, diversification, and a firm rejection of FOMO, is what will hopefully take me to $100,000 and beyond.

Exactly three years ago, on May 17, 2023, I decided to change the trajectory of my financial life forever. Before my official “start” in 2023, I was like many novice investors, chasing quick wins and following the hype. By 2022, I had achieved a “performance” that actually takes a lot of effort to reach: I managed to lose 75% of my portfolio’s value.

By May 2023, I had deposited a total of $350, which had dwindled to roughly $130, to only come back at $232.42 in May 2023. Even if the amount of money wasn’t important, in “percentage drop” perspective, I realized that treating the market like a casino was dangerous.

Year 1 (May 2023 – May 2024)

I started by educating myself. I moved away from “hot tips” and began studying how markets function, how to read financial statements, and how to analyze companies based on their risk profiles.

Socially, this was a lonely period. When I spoke to friends or family about investing, they would often change the subject, assuming I was “gambling”. I realized that most people live for the moment without a 20 or 30 year plan. I decided to find a balance, I wouldn’t deprive myself of everything today, but I committed to investing 25% of my income as a payment to my future self. I started small, with just $200 a month, focusing on building the habit rather than the amount.

Year 2 (May 2024 – May 2025)

As the habit became second nature, the noise of the world became quieter. I learned that the process can often feel slow and even frustrating; there were moments when it felt like I was going nowhere despite the effort. However, I stuck to my rules. I ignored the headlines and kept my eyes on the long-term profitability of the companies I owned. I also began tracking the overall wealth (Bank Deposits, Cash, Investments etc) in an Excel sheet, completing it the same day, month by month, which gave me the motivation to keep going by visualizing my progress.

Year 3 (May 2025 – May 2026)

As I reached the three-year mark today, the results speak for themselves. That original $232 portfolio has grown to over $23,000. While I deposited about $15,400 over these years (averaging roughly $416 a month), the growth of the markets and patience did the rest.

This final year also brought professional validation. I passed the exams for the CISI International Certificate in Wealth & Investment Management, providing me with a solid formal foundation for my future.

Perhaps most rewarding of all, my strategy has gained the trust of others. Today, I manage approximately $42,400 in Assets Under Management (AUM), including funds from eight other investors ($19.400) through Copy Trading, all of whom have seen their capital increase so far from +7% for the most recent copiers to +29% for the first ones.

Personal Notes

The following are the lessons I’ve noted down till now, to always remember in my Investment Journey:

• Track your monthly income and expenses and create a budget.

• Distinguish between your needs, your true wants, and the needs you think you have but don't actually require.

• Start as soon as possible

• Invest a portion of your income (regardless of the amount) as soon as you receive your salary.

• Forget about the money invested for the future, do not touch it for fleeting needs, only for urgent medical emergencies.

• Build a long-term portfolio by selecting established companies that are likely to remain profitable and relevant for many years and you would be comfortable keeping more than 5 years. Allocate half of your capital to an ETF tracking an index. (Not Financial Advice)

• Acknowledge that the process can be mentally taxing, there will be times when progress feels stagnant, and despite your initial enthusiasm, the plan may seem to lead to a dead end.

• News moves faster than you can process. Build your portfolio and your psychology in a way that both remain unaffected by sensationalist headlines.

• Compound interest takes a long time to show its power. The most important thing is to stay in the “game” for as many years as possible.

• Find people with similar interests, ideas, and goals to support you on your journey and keep you inspired.

• Don’t believe everything you read or hear. Always perform your own due diligence and research.

• Document your progress in an Excel sheet. Create charts, track statistics, or anything else you can imagine. Looking back at where you started and how far you’ve come will provide immense motivation for the future.

Standing here three years later, for me, that $23,000 figure is more than just a number on a screen, it represents the progress toward total financial freedom. It is proof that with a clear plan, and a willingness to continuously learning and evolving, anyone can build a more secure future.

The reputation of Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is a major casualty of this diplomatic wreckage. Acting as the primary intermediary during the Islamabad talks on April 11 to 12, Munir attempted to bridge the gap between Tehran and Washington.

However, there are indications that Munir may have profoundly misled the Trump administration regarding Iran’s willingness to capitulate. Factions within the IRGC have gone so far as to label Munir an “American agent,” accusing him of using the talks to gather intelligence on Iranian nuclear sites for the CIA and Mossad. The failure is absolute: Munir returned to Islamabad without a signature, and the sudden scaling back of security protocols at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad suggests that the diplomatic bridge has effectively collapsed.

Energy as a Weapon of Last Resort

The IRGC’s “Jihad-style” naval strategy has achieved what a conventional navy could not: maritime paralysis. By deploying swarms of speedboats and sea mines, Iran has successfully bypassed the U.S. Central Command’s three-layer blockade.

That event was not a random anomaly, but a catastrophic convergence of geopolitical friction, macro-economic imbalances, and the first true failure of automated trading systems.

The Geopolitical and Macro Fault Lines

The fuel for the 1987 crash was a cocktail of deteriorating fundamentals. Following a five-year bull market that saw indices rise nearly 300%, a sense of overvaluation had become pervasive. Hermès International, founded in 1837 and based in Paris, is a luxury goods manufacturer and retailer specializing in a diverse range of products including leather goods, equestrian equipment, ready-to-wear fashion, perfumes, and watches. Operating as a subsidiary of H51 SAS, the company is vertically integrated, overseeing its own textile production, tanning, and dyeing processes for precious materials. With a global presence, Hermès distributes its high-end collections through a network of 303 flagship stores and various specialized boutiques worldwide.

Current Standing

On April 15, 2026, Hermès International (RMS.PA) shares experienced a significant decline, dropping by as much as 8% following the release of its first-quarter financial results. Although the company remains one of the most resilient names in luxury, several factors contributed to the sell-off.

Revenue growth for Q1 2026 came in at 5.6% (totaling approximately €4.1 billion), which fell short of the 7% growth analysts had forecasted. Also management cited ongoing tensions in the Middle East as a primary headwind, as the region had previously been a high-growth driver for the brand. A big impact on the stock decline is the fact that there was a 3% decline in sales within the French market, largely due to a slowdown in high-end tourism rattled investor confidence. The results added to a broader "luxury slowdown" narrative, as competitors like Kering have also faced difficulties, leading investors to re-evaluate the short-term growth potential of the entire sector.

Τhe visual above, suggests that the company’s earning capacity is decoupling from its current share price. If the EPS projections of 45.9 (2026) and 53.12 (2027) hold true, the current price drop may represent a valuation reset rather than a decline in the company's actual business health. The company's operating margins remain exceptional, consistently staying above 40% over the last 5 years.

According to Morningstar, the stock continues to trade at a premium, as they estimate its fair value at €1,580, while the stock is currently trading at €1,630. Historically, this marks the first time since 2020 that the share price has approached the fair value set by Morningstar analysts.

Hermès Strategy

The core of the Hermès strategy lies in its unique "Artisanal Model," which prioritizes long-term brand equity over short-term volume. Unlike its competitors, the company avoids mass production, maintaining a strict policy of intentional scarcity, particularly for its iconic Birkin and Kelly bags. This strategy creates a massive supply-demand imbalance, ensuring that Hermès products retain or even increase their value in the secondary market. Furthermore, the brand is highly vertically integrated, owning its tanneries and maintaining its production almost exclusively in France. By April 2026, the company had expanded to 25 dedicated leather workshops, continuing to invest in craftsmanship to support its "Venture Beyond" theme. This focus on heritage, combined with an unrivaled operating margin consistently above 40%, allows Hermès to maintain its status as a financial "safe haven" in the luxury sector, characterized by extreme pricing power and a debt-free balance sheet.

My Thesis on Hermès International

Today, I initiated a position in Hermès International by purchasing 0.27 shares for €500 at an entry price of €1,630 per share. I am taking advantage of what appears to be a historically favorable entry point, as the stock is currently trading at a discount driven by geopolitical tensions and high analyst expectations that led to a short-term sell-off. While I have been tracking this brand for a long time, its premium valuation had previously deterred me from entering. Realty Income, The Monthly Dividend Company, is an S&P 500 company dedicated to providing stockholders with dependable monthly income. The company is structured as a REIT, and its monthly dividends are supported by the cash flow from over 6,500 real estate properties owned under long-term lease agreements with commercial clients. To date, the company has declared 608 consecutive common stock monthly dividends throughout its 52-year operating history and increased the dividend 109 times since Realty Income's public listing in 1994 (NYSE: O).

Current Standing

Realty Income (Ο), at the time of writing, is trading at $63.75. This is not a growth stock, nor one that will provide the volatility of Palantir or Tesla. The way the stock moves, combined with the consistently increasing high dividend distributed every month (5.07%), makes it behave more like a bond. On March 31st, the company announced a new dividend increase to be paid on April 15th at $0.2705 per share. This year, the stock is recording a gain of approximately +12%, as there is a recovery in investor confidence within the REIT sector, likely due to expectations of stabilizing or decreasing borrowing costs.

Diversification

Realty Income is not just a 'property owner', but a strategic partner to the economy's most resilient sectors. As shown by its portfolio structure, 11% comes from grocery stores and 9.6% from convenience stores, ensuring stable cash flows even under the most difficult economic conditions. Its exposure to services that require physical presence (gyms, dining, service centers) renders it 'shielded' against the onslaught of e-commerce.

Realty Income's top 20 tenant list includes global giants. With the majority of them holding an Investment Grade rating and no single tenant accounting for more than 3.3%, the company eliminates concentration risk. Of particular interest is the strong presence of European titans (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Carrefour), confirming its successful international strategy.

Realty Income is no longer limited to American shopping centers. With 15.4% of its portfolio in industrial real estate and nearly 1/5 of its revenue originating from the European market, it has built a global safety net. Its strategic entry into sectors such as Data Centers and Gaming properties demonstrates a management team that adapts to future needs, while simultaneously maintaining the stability of traditional retail.

At a glance, since its listing on the NYSE in 1994, Realty Income has grown by an average of 13.3%, while increasing its dividend by 4.2% annually, delivering dividends for 669 consecutive months. Today, it manages 15,500 properties under its umbrella.

If there is one chart that explains why Realty Income is considered one of the best REITs in the world, it is the one showing its portfolio occupancy. For over 30 years, the company has managed to keep its properties almost fully leased (consistently above 96%), disregarding recessions, pandemics, and economic crises. The recent 98.9% at the end of 2025 confirms that its model remains unscathed, providing the necessary assurance for the continuous payment of monthly dividends. The above conclusion is confirmed by the following chart:

Prior to the pandemic, the stock was trading near 24x-25x P/AFFO. Investors were paying a high premium, well above its historical average of 17x-18x, to acquire the stock. Towards the end of 2023, this ratio dropped to nearly 10x, making the stock quite attractive. The chart shows that the stock has begun to recover, but remains significantly lower than the average of the 2017-2022 period. Despite the recent rally, Realty Income's Forward P/AFFO stands at 14.28x, remaining far from pre-pandemic levels of 24x or even the conservative average of 18x. This suggests that the stock is trading at a significant 'discount' relative to its historical value, offering an attractive entry point for long-term investors seeking a combination of dividend income and capital appreciation.

REITs rely heavily on borrowing in order to grow and expand. It is logical that their debt levels are much higher than those of an ordinary company. This heavy reliance on leverage makes Realty Income particularly sensitive to interest rate fluctuations. When interest rates rise, borrowing costs increase, and profit margins are squeezed. Conversely, when rates fall, EPS increases, therefore, we expect the stock price to rise as well. In the chart above, we observe how Realty Income consistently maintains its debt-to-revenue ratio (with the exception of 2021, when it acquired VEREIT).

My Thesis on Realty Income

Realty Income serves as a "shield" stock in my portfolio. It currently accounts for 7.93% of the portfolio, having recorded a gain of +16.03%. In total, it has distributed approximately $90 in dividends, while the net dividend after taxes it now offers is $4.5/month or $54 per year.

In my personal opinion, the company's stock remains undervalued despite this year's rally. It is very well-established in the market, while its management is exceptional. It offers an excellent option for diversification in a portfolio where individual stocks are primarily technology based. I invest in companies that I understand, and Realty Income is one of those that offer me security, a consistently increasing dividend, and stabillity.

The end of Iran’s 7,000-year-old civilization (at least according to Trump) may have been averted just ninety minutes before the American President’s deadline expired, Israeli media may have been left holding their clocks and countdowns for the enemy’s annihilation, and the markets may have surged by over 3% in a single session, pricing in the end of the war, yet, two days later, no one feels certain about the future of the Middle East.

Exchange of threats, launches of attacks in every direction, regulation of oil flow, strikes on key installations, control of the straits, tolls on departing vessels and market manipulation is the summary of the last 5 weeks.

The international community watches as Pakistan takes center stage to create space for diplomacy. Meanwhile, every side presents the ceasefire to its domestic audience as a victory. The U.S. celebrates the reopening of the straits (yes, those that were open anyway before U.S. involvement), while the Iranians cheer for having held their ground against a superpower. On Truth Social, Trump frames the ceasefire to his voters not as a retreat, but as an Iranian capitulation under the threat of total destruction. Iran, in turn, is using the Islamabad negotiations to dictate its own terms, dubbed the “10-Point Plan.”

And then, of course, there is Israel. Israel “welcomed” the ceasefire but continues its operations against Hezbollah, arguing that the truce negotiated between the U.S. and Iran concerns only their direct conflict and not the threat of Hezbollah on its own borders. For Israel, Hezbollah remains an “existential threat” that must be neutralized regardless of what Washington has agreed upon. Hezbollah also happens to be Iran’s most vital ally in the region, and its weakening puts Tehran in an even more disadvantaged position at the bargaining table in Islamabad.

The Loopholes of the Ceasefire

Lebanon

There is a dangerous misinterpretation. Iran insists that the ceasefire also covers its allies (Hezbollah). Conversely, Trump and Israel have made it clear that Lebanon is not included in the agreement. The result was that just yesterday (April 8), Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon killed over 250 people, with Tehran warning that if the strikes in Lebanon continue, it will withdraw from the ceasefire and strike Israel once again.

The Strait of Hormuz

Although the ceasefire presupposes the reopening of the Straits, navigation remains paralyzed. Iran cites the presence of naval mines and proposes alternative routes under its own control. Furthermore, Iran is demanding war reparations and "tolls" for passing vessels, demands that the U.S. categorically rejects. As long as oil does not flow freely, the global economy exerts pressure for a return to hostilities.

Revolutionary Guards

Following the death of Khamenei (February 28), Tehran is a "boiling cauldron." The hardline Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), who now wield increased power, view the ceasefire as a humiliation. There is a fear that rogue IRGC units may act on their own, striking American vessels to torpedo the diplomacy of President Pezeshkian.

USA

Trump does not view the ceasefire as permanent, but rather as a probationary period. He has explicitly stated on Truth Social that if a “Real Agreement” regarding the shutdown of Iran’s nuclear program is not reached within the 14-day window, the US will make “the shootin’ starts” again with even greater intensity. This “all or nothing” approach leaves very little room for diplomatic maneuvers.

Stock Market

The stock market is in a state of confusion. It is pricing in the end of the war even before the Islamabad talks on April 10th. It is clear that the market is dancing to the tune of Trump and the Middle East, having detached itself from financial data and corporate fundamentals. This is to be expected, it happens in every geopolitical crisis. What is certain is that no one knows which way the market will swing until we emerge from the tunnel of the Middle Eastern war. A single post, a ballistic missile, or a downed pilot could overturn everything in a minute. The only certainty is that this is neither the first nor the last crisis we will face in our investment journey.

There is a widespread conviction among the investment community that Trump always retreats from his initial announcements. This has led to the acronym TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out). The 47th President of the United States undoubtedly bears no resemblance to any of his predecessors, whether in his style of governance, his communication methods, or his overall disregard for established codes of ethics and protocol.

The general sentiment among investors is that Trump is simultaneously unpredictably predictable and predictably unpredictable. Established data and global constants appear to be reeling under his presidency. His approach, frequently described as ‘transactional’, calls into question institutions and geopolitical balances.

Greenland

The case of Greenland is the most characteristic example. The public expression of interest in purchasing it (in 2019 and again with greater intensity in 2025-2026) shattered the long-held constant that territorial changes between Western allies belong to the past. Tariffs

About a year has passed since the unveiling of a tariff schedule ranging from 10% to over 100% on nearly every imported product across the entire globe.

• The Threat: Within the framework of the “Reciprocal Tariffs” doctrine, Trump announced tariffs on every imported product from every corner of the earth, even from uninhabited islands.

• The TACO: After a week of the stock market being in a freefall, the administration suspended most of the tariffs, characterizing them as a “temporary negotiating tool.” Investors dubbed this subsequent market rally the “TACO trade.”

NATO

For decades, the U.S. commitment to NATO and international organizations was non-negotiable. Trump questioned the alliance's value, labeling it "obsolete" and threatening withdrawal if Europeans did not increase their defense spending. This transformed a security guarantee into a "subscription service." The withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) demonstrated that the U.S. no longer considers international commitments to be permanent.

Venezuela

The operation in Venezuela in early 2026 began with the surprise capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. Special Forces, aiming for the immediate overthrow of the regime. Despite Trump's initial threats of a full-scale military occupation, the operation quickly evolved into one of the most significant "TACO incidents," as Washington retreated to an "advisory" role upon facing strong diplomatic resistance from Brazil and Colombia. The result was prolonged political uncertainty in Caracas, with the U.S. avoiding the direct involvement that it had initially promised.

Free Trade and Globalization

The constant that free trade is always beneficial has been replaced by protectionism. The use of horizontal tariffs (even against allies such as Canada and the EU) utilized the American market as leverage for political concessions. In the case of Iran, Donald Trump’s approach shattered traditional diplomatic constants, replacing them with an explosive mixture of military posturing and personal negotiation. In the eyes of the average citizen following these developments, Trump is portrayed as the "village idiot" who could dismantle an ancient civilization overnight. However, the game conceals elements that you and I cannot see, which only history will reveal to us in the future. Once again, the direct threat remained only on paper, and just one and a half hours before the deadline expired, Trump accepted the ceasefire proposed by Islamabad.

• The Threat (March 9, 2026): While the war was escalating, Trump stated that the operation was “nearly finished” and that Iran would surrender within 48 hours; otherwise, “total annihilation” would follow.

• The TACO: The 48 hours passed, oil prices surged past $100, and Iran did not surrender. Instead of escalating, Trump began speaking of an “honorable peace,” leading to the current ceasefire (April 7, 2026).

Conclusions

TACO incidents have given rise to a new strategy for U.S. adversaries: "Just wait." Analysts suggest that leaders are aware that Trump's threats have an "expiration date" and that he will eventually seek an emergency exit to protect both the markets and his image. While Trump proclaims a desire to end wars, his strategy in 2026 has created more active conflict zones than any other period, rooted in the belief that "extreme instability" is the only way for America to win. Donald Trump’s strategy, as it has taken shape up to April 2026, is based on a model that analysts call "Disruptive Transactional Diplomacy." It is not a traditional foreign policy based on ideology, but rather a "business deal" approach with a heavy dose of military might.

The investment community is no longer intimidated by the direct threats, having decoded the "pattern of retreat". While traditional diplomats view the erosion of institutions (such as NATO or the WHO) as the end of the global order, traders perceive a buying opportunity. The "TACO Trade" is predicated on the belief that Trump utilizes chaos as a marketing tool. The moment pressure reaches the point of threatening American prosperity, Trump will invariably prioritize the stability of market indices over the uncertainty of war. Consequently, diplomacy is being transformed from a science of peacekeeping into an exercise in volatility management.

“In the beginning, there was the land.” This fundamental truth suggests that the physical world (mountains, rivers, and deserts) dictates the destiny of the people living upon it. In most parts of the world, geography acted as a natural architect. Βorders formed where mountains rose too high to cross or where wide rivers provided a logical defense. However, in the Middle East, the 20th century saw a bold and ultimately catastrophic attempt by humans to rewrite these ancient rules.

For centuries, the region was a vast, fluid tapestry of tribes, religions, and ethnic groups, shaped by the harsh realities of the desert. But in 1916, two men, Mark Sykes of Britain and François Georges-Picot of France, sat in a room with a map and a ruler. With a few strokes of a pen, they ignored the “geographic destiny” of the land, creating artificial states like Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

They drew straight lines through trackless deserts, grouping together people who had been enemies for millennia and separating those who shared the same tongue and faith. By ignoring the natural barriers and the human geography of the region, they didn’t just create new countries. Τhey built a prison whose walls have been crumbling in blood and conflict ever since.

To understand the modern Middle East, one must first understand the tension between the borders drawn on a map and the indelible reality of the soil beneath them.

The Old World against the New Borders

To grasp the magnitude of the change, one must look at the “Old World” of the Middle East, a landscape defined not by hard lines, but by spheres of influence, nomadic routes, and ancient loyalties. Under the Ottoman Empire, though far from perfect, the region operated on a system of “Vilayets” (provinces) that often respected religious and tribal clusters. People identified more with their city (Damascus, Baghdad, Aleppo) or their tribe than with a “nationality.” The geography was a patchwork of mountains where minorities found refuge and vast deserts that served as highways for trade and culture.

Then came the “New Borders.” In the aftermath of World War I, Britain and France viewed the Middle East not as a living landscape of diverse people, but as a prize to be shared.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement introduced a concept alien to the region. The nation-state with fixed, linear borders. They split the Kurdish people across four different countries (Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran), ensuring a century of struggle for autonomy. Then they bunched together Sunnis and Shias in Iraq, and a volatile mix of Maronites, Sunnis, and Shias in Lebanon, expecting them to suddenly adopt a national identity that had no historical foundation.

By imposing these New Borders, the colonial powers effectively ignored the Old World’s social geography. They created areas where the inhabitants were forced to live within boundaries that felt foreign to the soil they walked on. When you try to force the complex reality of the Middle East into the straight lines of a European map, the result is a friction that eventually ignites into fire.

The State against the Nation

In the vocabulary of political science, a “Nation” is a group of people with a shared language, history, or culture. A “State” is a legal entity with defined borders and a government. In an ideal world, they overlap. But in the Middle East, the “States” were created first, and the “Nations” were expected to follow—a process that has proven both violent and fragile.

When Britain and France carved up the remnants of the Ottoman Empire, they ignored the tribal DNA of the region.

Iraq

A Triple Entrapment The British combined three distinct Ottoman provinces (Vilayets) into one country: the Shia-majority south, the Sunni-central heartland, and the Kurdish north. These three groups had little in common in terms of political aspirations. By forcing them into a single State, the colonial powers ensured that whoever held the capital (Baghdad) would have to rule with an iron fist to keep the other two from breaking away.

Syria

Similar to Iraq, Syria was a patchwork. The borders grouped together Sunnis, Druze, Christians, and Alawites. This created a permanent power struggle where a minority group often ended up controlling the state apparatus to ensure its own survival, leading to the catastrophic friction we see today.

Lebanon

The Fragile Mosaic Lebanon was designed to be a Christian-majority enclave, but its borders were expanded to include large Sunni and Shia populations. This transformed a potential Nation into a complex demographic puzzle where political power is divided by sect, making the State itself almost impossible to govern effectively.

Jordan

After WWI, the British carved out the Emirate of Transjordan primarily to provide a kingdom for the Hashemite family and to act as a buffer zone between their mandates in Palestine and Iraq. Geography was not kind to Jordan. It is mostly desert, lacks significant oil reserves, and has extremely limited access to the sea (the tiny port of Aqaba). Its borders forced a union between traditional Bedouin tribes and a massive population of Palestinian refugees. This makes Jordan a geographic miracle, a state with almost no natural resources or natural borders that has maintained stability through strategic diplomacy.

Saudi Arabia

The Arabian Peninsula is dominated by the Rub' al Khali (The Empty Quarter), a desert so vast it acted as a natural shield for centuries. Until the discovery of oil, the geography of the Nejd (the central desert) kept the House of Saud isolated and safe. Modern Saudi Arabia is a "State" that successfully used its vast, harsh geography to consolidate power before turning its underground resources into global influence.

The Kurds

Perhaps the most glaring example of the “State against the Nation” conflict is the Kurds. They are a Nation of over 30 million people with their own language and culture, yet they were (almost) never given a State.

The Treaty of Sèvres (1920) promised the Kurds an autonomous territory in southeastern Anatolia, with the potential for full independence within a year. However, this “State of Kurdistan” never materialized as the treaty was rejected by Turkish nationalists and superseded by the Treaty of Lausanne. This geopolitical shift left the Kurds as the world’s largest ethnic group without a sovereign state, divided across four separate borders. Instead, they were divided among four different countries, becoming a perpetual minority in every single one of them.

The Absence of Natural Barriers

In Europe, geography often acted as a peacemaker by providing clear, physical separation. The Pyrenees divide Spain from France, the Alps shield Italy, the English Channel protects Britain. These are “hard” borders that slow down invading armies and allow distinct cultures to develop in safety.

In the Middle East, the geography tells a different story.

Aside from a few exceptions like the Zagros Mountains in Iran or the Taurus Mountains in Turkey, the Arab heartland is defined by vast, open plateaus and flat deserts.

Without mountain ranges to act as natural walls, there is nothing to stop the flow of conflict. An insurgency in western Iraq can easily spill into eastern Syria because the terrain offers no physical resistance. The desert is not a barrier, it is a highway.

It isn’t just armies that move quickly across these flats, it is also ideologies. Pan-Arabism, various forms of religious extremism, and revolutionary waves (like the Arab Spring) travel across these artificial borders with ease because the land is contiguous.

Because many Middle Eastern states lack natural defensive barriers, they often feel perpetually insecure. This geographic anxiety leads governments to invest heavily in massive standing armies and oppressive security apparatuses, further fueling the cycle of instability.

The Legacy of the Mapmakers

The tragedy of the Middle East is that the mapmakers of 1916 acted as if the land was a blank canvas. They drew lines where there were no mountains to back them up and ignored the ancient, invisible boundaries of the people. By the time the colonial powers left, they had left behind a region where the political map and the physical map were in total contradiction.

Visa operates as the world's largest payment processor, underpinned by a powerful network effect that grants it a wide economic moat and an unassailable position in the global electronic payment infrastructure. Its business model is highly scalable, enabling consistently high operating margins and high ROIC. Visa is largely agnostic to specific payment method shifts (credit, debit, mobile), allowing it to continuously benefit from the overarching, long-term secular trend of electronic payment adoption worldwide. This structural advantage ensures its enduring relevance and profitability in the evolving payments landscape.

Current Standing

Visa stock has experienced a notable retracement of approximately 21.3% from its all-time high of $375.51, currently trading around the $295.52 mark. This decline is primarily attributed to a landmark $38 billion legal settlement alongside Mastercard, which mandates a reduction and a cap on transaction fees for the next five years. Additionally, the market is pricing in headwinds from the rising competition of alternative digital payment systems and state-backed networks, which has led to some caution regarding growth forecasts. Despite this recent pressure, the company’s "money machine" business model remains fundamentally highly profitable, and many analysts maintain a bullish outlook, viewing this correction as a strategic entry point for those betting on the network's long-term dominance.

Total Revenues & Net Income

What makes this specific chart impressive is that Net Income (purple line) is growing at a faster rate (14.39% CAGR) than Revenues (orange line - 11.52% CAGR). This demonstrates that Visa isn't just getting bigger. It's becoming more efficient over the years.

Operating & Net Margin

Visa operates with efficiency levels that are nearly unparalleled in the corporate world. As the chart shows, its Operating Margin consistently hovers around 60%, while its Net Profit Margin stands at a staggering 50.2%. To put this into perspective, for every dollar Visa earns in revenue, half of it ends up as pure profit. This is a clear testament to the 'toll-booth' nature of its business, once the infrastructure is built, every additional transaction processed carries almost zero incremental cost.

Return on Invested Capital (ROIC)

Another standout metric is Visa’s Return on Invested Capital (ROIC), which has climbed significantly to 29.4%. This ratio measures how effectively the company turns its capital into profit. A steady increase in ROIC, especially at this scale, is a rare hallmark of a high-quality business. It proves that Visa doesn't just generate cash, it reinvests it with increasing efficiency, further widening its competitive moat over time.

Stock Price & EPS

In the long run, a company’s stock price tends to follow its earnings power. This chart perfectly illustrates the correlation between Visa’s Stock Price (green line) and its Earnings Per Share (EPS) (red line). While the stock price can be volatile due to market sentiment or temporary legal headlines, it eventually tracks the steady upward trajectory of the company’s actual profits. Currently, we can observe a rare disconnect where the EPS continues to reach new highs ($10.66) while the price has pulled back, creating a valuation gap that historically tends to close as the market refocuses on fundamentals.

My Thesis on Visa

In the picture above, you can see all my entry points. My average cost basis sits at $317.68, and with the current market price at $295.52, my position is down approximately 7.06%. While seeing red in the short term is never ideal, I view this as an opportunity to further lower my average price in a company whose fundamentals remain solid.

In my personal view, Visa is currently trading at a significant discount. Despite the short-term noise and legal settlements, the company’s fundamental 'money-printing' nature remains intact. Given the current valuation gap we analyzed earlier, I believe this retracement offers a compelling long-term opportunity. As a result, I am likely to further increase my exposure to the stock, continuing to accumulate shares at these levels.

From Childhood Icon to Portfolio Titan

From the very beginning of my investment journey, Google has always been my favorite company. My generation grew up with Google, five colorful letters where you typed everything from games to encyclopedias and news. Over the years, its search supremacy never faltered; the company constantly expanded and adapted to the times, until 2022 arrived. In recent statements, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, admitted that Google was caught off guard by the arrival of ChatGPT, finding it inconceivable how quickly people embraced this new technology. Google did not sit idly by; despite the pressure on the stock due to fears that Google Search would be replaced by ChatGPT, the development and evolution of Gemini, along with investments in AI-related companies and sectors, have established it today as a titan, the second-largest company in the world, trailing only NVIDIA.

However, stock prices on the exchange move based on future expectations, not the past. As a strong proponent of Fundamental Analysis and far less of Technical Analysis, I believe a stock’s price increases when a company is able to grow its free cash flow and EPS, when its debt remains healthy, and when management executes flawlessly. As of the writing of this article (28/03/2026), the stock’s performance tells the following story, showing a 13% YTD decline.

But let’s dive a little deeper into some of the charts.

In general, stock prices tend to follow earnings per share over the long term. In early 2025, the short-duration narrative surrounding tariffs caused the stock price to diverge from earnings per share, creating an excellent investment opportunity at those levels. The white circles indicate the entry points for purchasing Google shares, gradually building a position as shown in Figure 2.

Despite the seemingly large rally since May 2025, Alphabet's (GOOG) all-time high is approximately $350.15, and with the current price hovering around $273.76, the drawdown from that ATH is roughly -21.8%. This translates to a $581 loss from just a single position. While this amount might be negligible or even laughable to some investors out there, for a portfolio in the $20,000 range, a loss of this magnitude from one position alone is noteworthy.

Free Cash Flow and Total Revenue

The chart presents a powerful narrative of sustained growth and massive capital generation over the last decade. From December 2016 to December 2025, the company achieved a staggering 346.25% total increase in annual revenue, climbing from $90.3B to $402.8B. This represents a remarkably consistent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18.1%, signaling that the core business engine has not lost its momentum even as it reached a massive scale.

At the same time, the Free Cash Flow (FCF) trajectory confirms that this is a highly efficient cash-generating machine. Growing from $23.9B to $73.3B, the 183.71% total change in FCF illustrates that Alphabet is consistently capable of producing significant liquidity after accounting for all its operating and capital expenses.

However, the most critical observation lies in the final year of the data. Between 2024 and 2025, while revenue continued its steep climb from $350B to $402.8B, the Free Cash Flow remained almost entirely flat, moving only from $72.8B to $73.3B. This widening divergence at the end of the chart indicates that Alphabet is currently in a phase of aggressive reinvestment. The company is effectively taking its record-breaking top-line growth and funneling it back into the business—likely into AI infrastructure and research, rather than letting it sit as excess cash. This suggests a strategic pivot toward future-proofing the company at the expense of short-term cash flow expansion.

Cash vs. Debt

The chart illustrating Alphabet’s balance sheet from December 2016 to December 2025 provides undeniable proof of the company’s “Fortress” financial status. The most striking feature is the massive cash cushion, with Total Cash and Cash Equivalents reaching $126.8B by the end of 2025. Despite a period of fluctuation between 2021 and 2024, likely driven by aggressive share buybacks and capital expenditures, the company successfully rebuilt its liquidity to near-record levels. This massive pile of cash represents a strategic safety net that allows Alphabet to operate with extreme flexibility regardless of broader market conditions.

While the Total Debt saw a significant jump in the final year, rising from $22.6B to $59.3B, it must be viewed in the context of the company’s total liquidity. Even with a 35.1% CAGR in debt growth, Alphabet remains a “net cash” company, as its $126.8B in cash is more than double its total debt obligations. This indicates that the company is likely utilizing debt strategically to fuel its massive AI expansion while keeping its cash reserves intact, a move that reflects sophisticated capital management.

Ultimately, this data confirms that Alphabet possesses the financial firepower to outlast any macro storm. With a cash position that could theoretically wipe out its entire debt tomorrow and still leave over $67B in the bank, the company is in a position of rare strength. For a long-term investor, this balance sheet serves as the ultimate insurance policy, proving that Alphabet can continue to fund its technological dominance without being hindered by high interest rates or credit constraints.

Return on Invested Capital (ROIC)

The slight decline from the 2024 high of 38.8% to 33.4% in late 2025 aligns perfectly with our previous observations of massive capital expenditure. When a company is in a heavy reinvestment phase—building data centers and buying high-end chips—the “invested capital” base grows rapidly, which can temporarily moderate the ROIC. However, staying above the 30% threshold while undergoing such a massive technological transition is a sign of immense competitive strength. It shows that Alphabet’s core business remains a high-margin engine that can support bold future bets without sacrificing overall capital efficiency.

Alphabet’s Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) chart provides a deep look into the company’s operational efficiency and the management’s ability to generate value from the capital it deploys. Maintaining a ROIC well above 25% for most of the decade, and reaching a peak of 45.7% in 2021, is a remarkable feat for a company of this scale. By December 2025, the ROIC stood at a robust 33.4%, which is significantly higher than the average cost of capital. This high return indicates that for every dollar Alphabet reinvests into its business, it generates a substantial profit, proving that its expansion into AI and cloud infrastructure is not just a defensive move, but a highly profitable one.

Ultimately, this chart is the “seal of approval” for the management’s execution. In a world where many tech companies struggle to find profitable use for their cash, Alphabet continues to find opportunities that yield elite returns. For a long-term investor, a consistently high ROIC is perhaps the most reliable indicator of a “moat,” as it demonstrates that the company possesses a unique ability to turn capital into compounding wealth, even amidst intense competition and shifting market dynamics.

Conlusions

For all the reasons mentioned above, my investment in Google does not shake my confidence in the company’s ability to generate value. Every dip is an opportunity, but the fact that the company already accounts for 13% of my portfolio does not leave me much room to increase the position, as it would deviate from my strategy regarding specific diversification levels. Furthermore, the fact that Warren Buffett added this particular stock around the $240 level, an investor who typically avoids tech stocks, reinforces my own conviction that this is a company that not only keeps pace with developments but leads them.

In the world of investing, there is an endless stream of noise. A conflict erupts in the Middle East, and suddenly everyone is an expert on oil futures. A new trend sweeps social media, and the hype train pulls out of the station. It is tempting to chase these waves, but I’ve learned that trying to stay one step ahead of the news cycle is a fool’s errand.

I am not the Oracle of Delphi, and I have no interest in pretending to be. Instead, I follow a simple, stoic philosophy: I invest in businesses, not in events.

The Business Partner Mentality

My portfolio is not opportunistic. I don’t buy gold simply because it is trending, and I won’t rotate out of foundational companies like Google or Realty Income just because a sector like defense is currently grabbing headlines.

Every position in my portfolio is held with one criteria in mind: Would I want to be a real-life partner in this business?

I look for companies capable of generating genuine value, independent of whether they are currently the flavor of the month, or buried under a mountain of market apathy. If a company has a competitive advantage and a robust business model, it earns its place in my portfolio. Its role is defined, and it stays there regardless of what the evening news dictates.

Managing Through the Tides

The beauty of this approach is that it simplifies the chaos of both bull and bear markets:

• During Hype: When valuations stretch and everyone is looking for the next big thing, I remain disciplined. I don’t need to capture the speculative upside of a bubble because my focus is on the long-term compounding of the businesses I already own.

• During Fear: When the markets drop and the headlines turn catastrophic, the temptation is to do something. But because my portfolio is built on businesses I trust as a partner, a downturn is simply a time to remain calm, or, occasionally, to double down on companies whose underlying value remains unchanged despite the price drop.

The Strategy of Staying Put

I do not build a portfolio on the back of current events. Events change daily but value-generating businesses are built to last for decades.

By ignoring the short-term volatility and staying committed to companies I fundamentally believe in, I avoid the trap of reactive investing. I don’t trade on news, I invest in the future. In a market that thrives on distractions, staying focused on the fundamentals isn’t just a strategy; it’s a must.

The Trap of Lucky Success

There is a dangerous psychological feedback loop in investing. The more ignorant an investor is, the more satisfaction they feel when a random guess pays off. That hit of dopamine, the thrill of being “right” without doing the work, is seductive. It tricks you into believing you have an edge.

But here is the reality: you can get lucky once or twice,. You can ride a speculative wave and call yourself a genius. But in the long term, the market has a way of separating luck from genuine business acumen. I have no interest in the temporary highs of gambling on market movements. I prefer the slow, compounding reality of being a partner in a great business over the fleeting satisfaction of a lucky guess.

I prefer to let my feelings out of the game. I prefer to invest like a Robot.

When we look at the map of the world, Russia stands out as a singular, imposing entity. Spanning eleven time zones and covering more than 17 million square kilometers, it is a nation defined by its sheer scale, a landmass so vast that it bridges the gap between the Baltic Sea and the Pacific Ocean. For centuries, this ‘immense’ size has been perceived as the ultimate symbol of Russian strength, fueling a narrative of a global superpower capable of exerting unrivaled influence.

However, beneath this facade of grand territorial reach lies a complex geopolitical paradox: Russia is not necessarily a powerhouse defined by its strength, but rather a nation constrained by its geography. While its size provides a degree of strategic depth, it also creates an arduous, expensive, and logistically fragile burden. In the twenty-first century, the very landscape that Russia relies upon for survival has become its greatest liability. The North European Plain

The most profound geopolitical challenge for Russia lies in its geography, specifically, the vast, flat expanse known as the North European Plain. Stretching from the borders of Germany and Poland all the way to the outskirts of Moscow, this region serves as a massive, unobstructed highway that offers no natural barriers to invasion. For centuries, this lack of mountains, major rivers, or significant topography to serve as a defensive shield has haunted Russian leadership.

Because the terrain provides no tactical advantage for defense, Moscow has developed an existential reliance on ‘strategic depth’, the necessity of pushing military threats as far from the Russian heartland as possible. Consequently, the Black Sea, and specifically the Crimean Peninsula with its deep-water port of Sevastopol, serves as an indispensable ‘warm-water’ artery. For Moscow, access to the Black Sea is not merely a regional interest; it is the vital, year-round gateway to the Mediterranean and the global trade network. Without this, Russia risks being geographically bottled up, its naval ambitions stifled by the very climate that defines its northern frontiers.

The Cost of Distance

Beyond the vulnerability of its borders and the constraints of its ports, Russia faces the immense ‘cost of distance.’ Governing a territory that spans eleven time zones is an logistical undertaking of unparalleled complexity. The vast majority of Russia’s population, industrial infrastructure, and political power is concentrated in the western part of the country, leaving the vast interior, the Siberian heartland, isolated and difficult to integrate.

This geographical fragmentation creates a significant drain on national resources. Because Russia lacks the dense, highly integrated network of internal waterways and railways found in regions like Western Europe or the American Midwest, the state must invest heavily simply to keep its far-flung provinces connected to the center. Transporting goods from the resource-rich regions of the East to the markets and ports of the West is a slow, expensive process that makes Russia’s economy inherently less efficient compared to nations with more compact, coastal-oriented geographies. The sheer physical expanse necessitates a highly centralized, often top-down administrative model, not merely by political choice, but by the physical necessity of overcoming the friction of distance. In this sense, the size of the state is not a source of power, but a constant, heavy overhead that demands perpetual state attention and capital just to maintain basic internal stability.

Geopolitical Response

By cultivating a bloc that rejects the ‘liberal international order,’ Russia attempts to build a protective shield that minimizes the influence of Western-led institutions. These alliances provide Moscow with critical logistical and economic lifelines that mitigate the impacts of its geographical limitations. For instance, deeper ties with the East offer alternative markets for energy exports that would otherwise be hampered by limited warm-water access to Western markets. Furthermore, by fostering stability among like-minded, non-democratic regimes, Russia secures its ‘sphere of interest’ and creates a multi-polar coalition that views external intervention, particularly from the US or NATO, as a common threat to national sovereignty. In this sense, Moscow’s foreign policy is a direct reflection of its geographical insecurity; it seeks to turn an environment of potential encirclement into a fortified network of strategic partnerships, prioritizing regime stability and regional control over broader integration into the global democratic system.

Is Geography Destiny?

As we survey the geopolitical landscape of the Russian Federation, the conclusion is clear: Russia is not a conventional superpower defined by its vastness, but a nation eternally engaged in a struggle against the limitations imposed by its environment. Its history is a testament to the fact that while a large landmass can provide resources and defensive depth, it can also become a trap, a sprawling, difficult-to-manage territory that requires constant, resource-heavy oversight to keep from fracturing.

The core challenge for the Russian state in the twenty-first century is whether it can transcend these historical geographical constraints. Can it modernize its economy to thrive despite the ‘friction of distance’? Can it secure its national interests without relying on the costly, often aggressive pursuit of buffer zones? Or is it destined to remain a power forever preoccupied with the fragility of its borders, trapped between an open western plain and a frozen northern expanse? Only two months into 2026, events have already fundamentally shifted the geopolitical landscape, with Donald Trump’s America playing a high-stakes game of tactical chess. Let’s not be fooled: behind the overthrow of the Iranian theocratic regime lies the objective of cutting off the flow of cheap oil to China. This was preceded by Russia’s four-year war with Ukraine, which effectively neutralized Russia’s ability to support Venezuela or Iran. The abduction of Maduro and India’s new agreements with Europe have dealt a massive blow to the BRICS nations.

Under the guise of a mad and unpredictable leader, America is delivering masterclasses in geopolitical tactics, reckless and overt? Quite possibly. However, China’s deafening silence for the time being suggests that its leadership is stunned, forced to watch a game being played against them, without them.

Stock Markets

International stock markets are displaying unprecedented composure and optimism, betting that the conflict will be brief and won’t significantly impact the global economy. The boards remain neutral, moving sideways as if waiting for breaking news to dictate a green or red direction. The truth is that rising oil prices increase the production costs of raw materials, driving up prices for the end consumer and ultimately fueling the inflation that the Fed has been trying to curb for years. It will be interesting to see how the Fed reacts in the coming months and what its policy on interest rates will be.

My personal view is that the Fed will maintain a neutral stance on interest rates for 2026. However, if the war lasts longer than anticipated, we cannot rule out new hikes in benchmark interest rates.
